The city

Ålesund is a central hub within the maritime industry and one of Norway’s most important fishing harbors. The city is set on several islands which are connected by bridges. A neat way to explore this beautiful city is kayaking on the canal that runs right through the centre of town! The municipality has a population of around 67,000 people. National Geographic has selected Ålesund as one of the most beautiful port cities in Europe!

Ålesund is internationally known for its distinctive architecture in the “Art Noveau” style (Jugendstil), with towers, spires, and imaginative design on the building exterior. This style of architecture was the result of the rebuild after the catastrophic fire in 1904 that completely destroyed the center of the town.

The surroundings

Ålesund is situated in between the cities of Bergen and Trondheim. It is also adjacent to the Hjørund fjord and Geiranger fjords, the latter being on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.

Ålesund is also a great base for touring the spectacular mountains of the Sunnmøre alps, the iconic scenic route Trollstigen, the Øye glaciers, and the beautiful islands of Runde and Giske which are known for its spectacular wild sea- and bird life.

Fun Fact

The mountains in the Ålesund area are very steep, the vertical rises nearly 6,561 feet (2 km) straight up from the sapphire blue fjords.
