The City

Surrounded by forests nestled by the Oslofjord inlet, Oslo is a beautiful green city, with rich culture and historic sites. It is the capital of Norway, with a population of approximately 700,000 people, and is among Europe's fastest-growing cities. Despite the rapid growth, it has preserved its quiet small-town atmosphere and is one of the most walkable capitals in the world.

Oslo is blessed with many green parks, and the Oslofjord's waterways and islands are just minutes away from the city center, as are the ski slopes and forests of "Nordmarka." The forests are a popular destination for Norwegians and tourists alike, both in summer and winter.

Amongst the most popular attractions in Oslo are the outdoor statue park, Vigeland's park, the museum of the famous painter Edvard Munch and the opera house.

Oslo was named the European Green Capital for 2019 due to one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world, excellent public transport, and a genuine commitment to sustainable food production and green space. The city aims to cut emissions by an ambitious 95 percent by 2030.

The surroundings

Oslo is located at the northernmost end of Oslofjord and is surrounded by forests, green hills, and mountains. About 40 big and small islands are in and around the city limits. If you want to swim in the summer, this can be either in the sea or in one of Oslo's 343 lakes. You can travel by train from Oslo to Norwegian cities like Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger or Gothenburg and Stockholm in Sweden.

Fun fact

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo and Oslo's city hall hosts the award ceremony every autumn. The Norwegian Nobel Committee selects the recipient, as outlined in Alfred Nobel's wishes.  Visitors can learn more about the Prize at the Nobel Peace Center, located next to both the Hexagon Purus office and the City Hall.
