Green steel on the rise – steel production without fossil fuels

For decades, the steel industry was long considered one of the largest industrial CO₂ emitters – but this is undergoing a fundamental shift. With the advent of green hydrogen and innovative production processes like direct reduction without fossil fuels, a completely new chapter in steel production is emerging: climate-neutral, efficient, and sustainable.
Green steel is increasingly transitioning from a niche product into an industrial beacon of hope, driven by political frameworks, growing market demand, and technological breakthroughs.
Hexagon Purus supports this transformation with a comprehensive portfolio of high-pressure hydrogen cylinder, mobile storage solutions, and integrated supply systems – developed for a safe, flexible, and scalable hydrogen infrastructure in industry.

Why steel industry needs a transformation

As a cornerstone of the global economy, with applications spanning construction, the automotive industry, and infrastructure, the steel industry produces over 1.8 billion tons of crude steel annually.
Conventional steel production primarily utilizes the blast furnace converter process, which involves reducing iron ore with coke at very high temperatures – a process releasing significant quantities of CO₂. This method generates an average of around 1.8 tons of CO₂ per ton of crude steel. Globally, the steel industry is therefore responsible for approximately 7-9% of energy-related CO₂ emissions. These figures underscore that achieving international climate targets will be exceedingly difficult without a substantial decarbonization of steel production.
As a key industrial player, the steel industry holds a crucial role in combating climate change. Its immense emissions are closely linked to demand across nearly all sectors of the global economy.
Simultaneously, the industry presents enormous potential for emissions reduction. Switching to hydrogen-based direct reduction processes and utilizing green hydrogen can drastically lower emissions – theoretically to near zero. This makes “green steel” a pivotal element for climate-neutral value chains, from the automotive sector to mechanical engineering and construction.

Direct reduction with hydrogen – the path to green steel

Green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis using renewable energies, replaces coke, the previously used reductant in the direct reduction process (DRI). In this process, hydrogen reduces iron ore to iron, with water vapor as the only byproduct instead of CO₂. This process enables near emission-free steel production, marking a fundamental change in industrial production.
Modern DRI plants such as H2DRI are considered key solutions for decarbonization. Initial large-scale projects demonstrate its readiness for industrial use. However, its widespread adoption requires more than just innovative processes; a reliable and continuous supply of hydrogen on an industrial scale is crucial.

Security of supply thanks to modular high-pressure systems

A reliable and scalable hydrogen supply is the backbone of emission-free steel production. Direct reduction plants place particularly high demands on hydrogen supply – both in continuous operation and during transition or pilot phases. Consistent pressure, high purity, and flexible storage and supply solutions are crucial.
Hexagon Purus offers a wide range of industrial-grade high-pressure storage systems that are specially developed to meet the requirements of energy-intensive sectors like the steel industry. These systems are based on ultra-light Type IV pressure cylinders made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, capable of withstanding pressures up to 950 bar, are corrosion-free, and offer a long service life with a low dead weight.

The product range focuses on three high-performance storage systems:

  • Hydrogen high-Pressure Type 4 cylinders: These individual cylinders form the basis for many modular storage solutions, boasting low weight, extreme pressure resistance, and flexible application options in both stationary and mobile settings.
  • Stationary storage: Permanently installed storage systems on factory premises ensure the continuous supply of direct reduction systems. These units offer high storage density in a compact footprint and can be adapted to growing production capacities due to their modular design.
  • High-pressure gas bundles: These systems bundle several high-pressure cylinders into compact, transportable units. They are particularly suitable for temporary use, transitional phases, or as a supplement to stationary storage – for example, where there's no pipeline connection or additional buffer capacity is needed.

All solutions meet the highest international safety standards (e.g., ISO 11119, UN ECE R134) and are equipped with integrated sensors for monitoring pressure, temperature, and fill level. The simple integration into existing industrial processes and the quick exchangeability of individual modules enable a low-maintenance, predictable, and scalable supply system.

Efficient hydrogen transport to the point of use

Transporting hydrogen is a major challenge in industrial scale-up, especially when production sites lack direct connections to pipelines or electrolysis plants. In such cases, mobile, economical, and safe supply solutions are needed that can be flexibly integrated into existing logistics and production structures.
Hexagon Purus offers specialized transport modules for this purpose: mobile high-pressure cylinder containers for transporting large quantities of compressed hydrogen (CGH₂). Based on Type IV pressure cylinders, these systems are designed in standardized ISO container formats up to 45 ft and optimized for heavy-duty transport. Their international approval allows flexible use across road, rail, or waterways – even across borders.

Key benefits at a glance

High transport capacity with low space requirements: Largest transport capacity worldwide for a reduced total cost of ownership. Standard modules are available in flexible sizes from 10 to 45 feet for industrial customers and mobile refueling systems with cascade technology for filling stations.

Reliable supply for remote locations: Ideal for steelworks lacking pipeline connections or electrolysis infrastructure, and as a temporary solution during commissioning or conversion work.

Integrated safety and monitoring: We conduct extensive tests on the modules and their safety systems to ensure the safety of personnel working near our modules.

Easy integration thanks to standardized interfaces: The modules can be easily integrated into existing systems without significant planning or installation effort.
