Hydrogen storage cylinders
Unprecedented hydrogen storage cylinders from Hexagon Purus
Hydrogen offers a limitless source of energy and is applicable for a wide range of applications. However, the fascinating properties of hydrogen also pose challenges, especially when it comes to storage and transportation.
At Hexagon Purus, we offer pioneering solutions that are shaping the future of hydrogen technology. In a world where hydrogen is both used and produced, advanced technologies must ensure that this powerful energy carrier is stored efficiently and, above all, safely. Depending on pressure and temperature, hydrogen tanks must meet the highest physical requirements to ensure an optimal balance between performance and safety.

Main requirements for hydrogen storage cylinders
The storage of hydrogen is a central aspect of the hydrogen economy - as an energy source, hydrogen already plays an important role in various applications. There are different methods of storing hydrogen, although hydrogen storage cylinders are of particular importance.
Hydrogen can be stored effectively in gaseous and liquid form. In gaseous form, hydrogen is stored in high-pressure tanks, while liquid hydrogen storage requires cryogenic temperatures, as the boiling point of hydrogen is -252.8°C.
The most important requirements for hydrogen storage cylinders include:
- Tightness to safely retain all hydrogen and only release it in a controlled and safe manner
- Compact design so that the hydrogen storage cylinders take up as little space as possible
- High fatigue resistance for a long service life
- Reasonable weight
What makes cylinders efficient?
A hydrogen cylinder is an integral part of a hydrogen storage system - with these systems, we make a sustainable contribution to the efficient use of hydrogen in various industries and applications.
The storage of hydrogen in compressed form plays a decisive role for mobility and large-scale transportation in the hydrogen industry. Lightweight composite gas cylinders not only offer an increased payload, but also enable storage and transportation on a large scale. These composite storage solutions are characterized by high durability and meet the demanding requirements for the expected large-scale production and high consumption of hydrogen in the coming years.
Hydrogen storage cylinders are available in different designs and types:
- Type I hydrogen tanks are made entirely of metal. These tanks are characterized by their simple design and manufacture, resulting in comparatively cost-effective solutions.
- Type II tanks combine a metallic inner lining with an outer jacket made of fiberglass hoop. This structure significantly enhances the physical properties of the tank. This design allows higher hydrogen pressures to be achieved with a thin-walled inner lining, resulting in a weight advantage compared to other designs
- Type III tanks use an inner metal lining that is essentially no longer able to withstand the pressure load. However, this function is completely taken over by an outer sheathing made of carbon fiber. This outer shell takes on additional fixing and support tasks and enables efficient weight optimization of the tank.
- Type IV tanks from Hexagon Purus rely on state-of-the-art technology that combines a fiberglass/carbon fiber wrap and a plastic inner liner. This innovative combination of materials gives the tanks exceptional performance while reducing weight.
